Through the Mail Autographs

 Here's everything you need to know about through-the-mail (TTM) autographs.

The key to any TTM autograph request is the letter. It's Very important that you are genuine and not someone looking to cash in on their signature. Here are a few simple things to consider when you're writing your letter.

1. Be a Fan - being a genuine fan and buttering up the athlete will go a long way. It lets them know you are more than just a money hungry trader. Let them know why your a fan and how much they mean to you.

2.  Keep it Simple - Try and keep the letter short and sweet. Try not to ramble on and on, over and over about this and that. Your letter shouldn't be more than 1 page long.

3. DO NOT TYPE IT! - The letter should be personal. a hand written letter is much more personal and effective.

After you have your letter ready, don't forget to include the cards or 3x5 index cards you are looking to have autographed. include a self addressed and postage paid return envelope for the return trip, and don't forget to include a thank you message in your letter. I wouldn't include more than maybe two cards in a single request.

Other places you may consider sending requests include spring training facilities, minor league affiliates or other places they might be hanging out at like TV studios. 

Something else to remember, not all athletes will sign and return them. Some may use an autopen instead of signing themselves. So do not plan on sending high value cards unless you can live without ever seeing them again. It also may take several months before and if you get a reply. Remember, Athletes have busy lives and are people too.
